In 1984 the students of Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University were the first touring team to visit the barely one-year old Rugby Club Waterland. On this occasion it was the students who did the teaching as Waterland lost heavily.
Since then we have hosted many other clubs from abroad and not only from Britain but also Belgium, France Spain and even Russia with teams ranging from minis and youth through to adult. At the same time the lessons of 1984 have not been lost as we (like to think) we can provide a competitive game for any team on tour, if not necessarily in the first two halves then definitely in the “third half” afterwards.

As well as our rugby playing abilities, the club itself has grown and developed:
- With approximately 200 club members, as well as men’s, including veterans, teams we have a full Ladies team and a range of youth age group teams
- Our clubhouse and facilities include two full-size pitches, five changing rooms, a kitchen for after match food and a large bar area
- If arriving by Newcastle-IJmuiden ferry we are 45 minutes away (45 km/28 miles) by road from IJmuiden
- From Schiphol Amsterdam airport you can reach us within 35 minutes by road (37 km/23 miles) or around 45 by train with a direct train service to Purmerend Overwhere station, less than 5 minutes walk from our clubhouse
- If you want to enjoyAmsterdam’s day or nightlife, the city centre is half an hour away; in fact many clubs that have visited us actually book their accommodation in Amsterdam
